Following a limited preview launch three months ago, Microsoft is making its AI-powered Bing search engine available to all users. Users must be logged into Microsoft’s Edge browser in order to access it. The upgrade employs the artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT, whose tone and occasional inaccuracies have raised concerns. Vice President Yusuf Mehdi stated that Bing now has more than 100 million daily active users, a significant increase over the past few months. Google is incorporating comparable AI capabilities into its search engine.
Microsoft demonstrated its chatbot updates at a press event in New York City, including the ability to pose queries using images, access chat history, and export responses to Microsoft Word. The chatbot will provide responses that match the user’s favored tone and style. Microsoft intends to integrate ChatGPT into its primary productivity applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
While some of the largest names in technology, such as Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak, have called for a six-month halt to the training of the most advanced AI systems, Mehdi believes that such calls are counterproductive. He believes that developing AI technology in the open and in the public is the most effective method.
Given how much people rely on search engines for accurate and trustworthy information, Microsoft’s decision to add generative AI features to Bing may be hazardous. However, the attention surrounding ChatGPT has reignited the competition among tech companies to implement similar AI tools in their products. OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google are at the forefront of this trend, but a large number of firms are creating AI writing assistants and image generators as well.
