Google published an urgent security update for the Chrome browser earlier this week due to an active vulnerability. This flaw is currently being exploited in the field and may result in heap corruption.
Google emphasized CVE-2023-2033, a vulnerability disclosed by Clément Lecigne of Google’s Threat Analysis Group (TAG). This vulnerability is a ‘type confusion’ flaw in the Chromium browsers’ V8 JavaScript engine. Type confusion is an error that enables memory access with the incorrect type, resulting in the reading or writing of memory outside of the allowed range. An adversary is able to generate HTML pages that enable heap corruption exploitation.
Unknown Problems Fixed in the Update
In addition to fixing this vulnerability, Google also patched a number of unidentified issues. Users should update to v112.0.5615.121 to maintain security. Users can manually check for updates by choosing the three dots menu in the upper right corner of Chrome, selecting “Help,” and then “About Chrome.”
Chrome users who are aware of an active exploitation of a vulnerability should immediately check for an update to safeguard their computers and data, before warning agencies issue an official statement. Consequently, it is prudent to be vigilant about updating and patching software as soon as feasible.
