Tom Ford, the 61-year-old fashion designer who co-founded the Tom Ford design house in 2005, has announced his retirement from the brand. Ford sold the company to Estée Lauder last November for approximately €2.52 billion. Domenico de Sole, the brand’s other co-founder, is also stepping down and will be replaced by Guillaume Jesel as chief executive and president. Estée Lauder will manage the cosmetics and fragrance businesses, while Ermenegildo Zegna will oversee men’s and women’s fashion after acquiring a 30-year licensing deal.

The Tom Ford brand has enjoyed great success and features a well-regarded fashion line, a lucrative beauty wing, and an eyewear business via a licensing agreement with the Italian group Marcolin. The eyewear business will continue to manufacture and sell products. In a surprise move, Ford released a “final collection” featuring supermodels of the 1990s wearing archive designs from the past 13 years. He was a huge name in fashion, having revitalized Gucci with his glamorous and highly coveted designs, starting with his smash hit 1995 collection.

Peter Hawkins, a long-time associate of Ford’s, will take on the vacant role of creative director. Hawkins joined Ford at Gucci in 1998 and moved to the Tom Ford brand in 2006, most recently holding the role of senior vice-president of menswear. In a separate statement, it was announced that Ford would be working more in the film industry via his production company, Fade to Black, having already made successful movies, including 2009’s A Single Man and Nocturnal Animals in 2016.
