Snapchat’s New AI Chatbot Sparks Privacy Concerns Among Parents

Spread the love

My AI chatbot, Snapchat’s newest feature, is causing concern among parents and some users who claim it poses privacy concerns and is “creepy.” The ChatGPT-powered AI chatbot provides recommendations, answers queries, and is customizable. According to a mother from Missouri, the resemblance to a human is baffling to younger users. Concerns have been raised that it may instruct children on how to deceive their parents, prompting Democratic Senator Michael Bennet to express concern. Despite Snapchat’s assertions that it is enhancing My AI, pervasive user community opposition exists.

Backlash

Users of Snapchat have voiced their concerns, with one alleging that the AI lied about not knowing the user’s location. The chatbot correctly identified the user’s location as Colorado. Concerns were also raised regarding photo comprehension, interaction, and information collection. The ability to remove My AI from conversation feeds requires a subscription to Snapchat+’s monthly premium service. Some users have chosen to pay the $3.99 charge, deactivate the tool, and cancel their subscription in order to avoid the fee.

Positive Opinions

Some users have noted that My AI provides assistance with assignments, while others have stated that it provides excellent advice for real-world situations. They view it as a “best friend” that provides solace and guidance. Snapchat continues to enhance the application based on user feedback, establishing safeguards to protect its users. Similar to other utilities, the company claims that My AI is optional.

A Warning to Businesses

The contradictory responses to Snapchat’s new AI chatbot illustrate the dangers of introducing generative AI technology into consumer products. While some may find the tool useful, it has forced legislators and families to consider issues that only a few months ago may have seemed theoretical. This early assessment of adolescent chatbot usage demonstrates that companies must carefully consider how to implement generative AI in products aimed at younger audiences.
