Numerous sanctions imposed on Russia pose a significant obstacle to the country’s ability to produce electronic goods. As a consequence, there is a scarcity of microchips, which has a negative impact on tank warfare. This lack of access to modern electronics, including semiconductors, has impeded the development of new military technologies in Russia. The situation has deteriorated to the point where vehicles from the second world war are being deployed to the front lines.
The impact of sanctions on Russia’s Military Technologies
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 resulted in numerous sanctions that hampered Russia’s economy, ability to trade with other nations, and even energy exports. This, coupled with the complete incompetence of the Russian military and the country’s enormous military expenditure, has placed Russia in a dire financial situation. As modern armed forces rely heavily on encrypted communication channels, GPS, real-time data processing, and detection systems, restricting Russia’s access to semiconductors will have a profound effect on its ability to fight Ukraine. Russia’s lack of access to contemporary electronics has made it impossible for the country to develop new military technologies.
Putin establishes a new fund to assist with the security of semiconductors and drones.
Putin has recently announced a new fund that will promote the technological development of semiconductors and drones in Russia, in recognition of their significance. In Ukraine, unmanned aviation, microelectronics, robotics, wireless communication, and cargo delivery have all been essential. The total fund will provide 6.4 billion rubles (approximately $80 million) to support initiatives in these fields. Nonetheless, the ongoing sanctions will make it challenging for prototypes to enter production.
Consequences for Russia in the distant future
Russia will become an even greater pariah if the conflict continues, and countries will be less likely to collaborate with Russia on new initiatives, provide funding, or share research. The ongoing conflict will also prevent Russia from investing in semiconductors as the rest of the world imposes additional sanctions. Even if China produces sophisticated semiconductors, Russia may not receive them. Therefore, unless a Russian revolt deposes Putin and he promptly withdraws from Ukraine, the ongoing conflict will have devastating long-term consequences for Russia.
