North Korea’s Announcement

North Korea has officially confirmed its intention to launch a reconnaissance satellite in June. According to state media reports on Tuesday, a senior defense official stated that the satellite is necessary to monitor the military movements of the United States and its allies in real time.

Purpose and Importance of the Satellite

The satellite, referred to as “military reconnaissance satellite No. 1,” will be launched alongside various other reconnaissance means that are set to be tested. These assets are deemed essential for tracking, monitoring, and proactively addressing the perceived dangerous military activities of the US and its vassal forces, as stated in the report.

Response and Accusations

North Korean Vice-Chairman Ri Pyong Chol, a member of the ruling party’s central military commission, emphasized the need to enhance reconnaissance and information capabilities, along with improving defensive and offensive weaponry. Ri blamed the United States for conducting hostile air espionage activities in the Korean peninsula and its vicinity.

Launch Details and Precedents

Japan was informed by Pyongyang that the rocket launch would take place between May 31 and June 11, with designated warning areas in the waters near the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea, and the east of Luzon Island in the Philippines. These areas typically serve as precautions for falling debris or rocket stages. Notably, North Korea has previously tested ballistic missiles disguised as satellite launches in 2012 and 2016, which flew over Japan’s southern Okinawa region.

Kim Jong Un’s Involvement

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un personally inspected the country’s first military spy satellite, approving its “future action plan” earlier this month. The development of this satellite aligns with North Korea’s strategy to bolster its military preparedness in response to what it perceives as reckless actions by the United States and South Korea.
