iOS 17 Is Expected to Enable Sideloading.

Apple is expected to release its annual operating system updates, including iOS 17, at WWDC 2023. While the iOS changes will be the most anticipated, the updates for 2023 are rumored to focus more on regulatory compliance than on brand new features. According to a recent report, iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 are not expected to include significant new features, but rather minor enhancements that address user concerns. However, Apple is anticipated to enable sideloading on iOS as its most significant change.

Observance of New EU Law

Apple is preparing to comply with new European Union law modifications that will take effect in 2024. The Digital Markets Act will require Apple to permit the existence of third-party app stores on iPhones and iPads. Apple is reportedly reworking iOS to allow sideloading in order to comply with this regulation. Side-loading enables users to install applications on their device via means other than the App Store. Apps may be transferred from a connected computer, downloaded from the Internet and installed independently.

Resistance to Change

Although Apple appears to be complying, it is likely that the company will resist the requirement until the very end. Apple has repeatedly stated that alternative app stores and jailbreaking pose a threat to user security, and it is unlikely that this stance will change in the foreseeable future. It is also important to note that Apple will not introduce many new features with iOS 17.

Upgrades for Additional Operating Systems

In addition to iOS 17 and iPadOS 17, Apple will introduce macOS 14 and a significant update to watchOS 10 at WWDC 2023. iPadOS 17 updates are anticipated to “lay the groundwork” for upcoming iPad Pro models with OLED displays. The watchOS 10 update will focus primarily on the operating system, which may lead to minimal hardware updates in the future.
