Republican presidential candidates will speak at the Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition’s spring kickoff event to court Christian conservatives. Ex-Vice President Mike Pence, ex-Gov. Asa Hutchinson, ex-Senator Tim Scott, and ex-Rep. Will Hurd are among the expected speakers. Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the Republican Party has struggled to navigate the abortion and GOP issue from a political standpoint. Also scheduled to address are the Republican presidential candidates Vivek Ramaswamy, Larry Elder, Perry Johnson, and Tulsi Gabbard. The forum occurs at a time when abortion once again dominates the political landscape, following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and the ongoing legal battle over an abortion medicine. The event is anticipated to attract more than 1,000 attendees.
GOP versus Abortion
Democrats performed better than anticipated in the midterm elections of 2022, as candidates appealed to supporters of abortion rights who were motivated by the high court’s ruling. Several conservative candidates have lost competitive contests in recent years, including this month’s Wisconsin Supreme Court election in which abortion was a central issue. Candidates for the Republican nomination will have to consider their personal stances on the issue and how they will present and communicate their position to voters.
Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis are conspicuously absent from the list of speakers, fueling speculation about a potential presidential candidacy. Last week, behind closed doors, Governor DeSantis signed a bill that would prohibit most abortions in Florida after six weeks of pregnancy, which is before many women even realize they are expectant. Pence commended DeSantis for signing the bill and lauded a Texas federal judge’s decision earlier this month to suspend the FDA’s approval of the safe and effective abortion drug mifepristone.
Trump’s Position
Friday, in response to criticism from the anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, the Trump campaign modified its position that abortion should be a state issue. Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, a Trump spokesperson told CNN that “the States are now empowered to take up the issue” and that Trump “believes that the greatest advances in protecting the unborn can now be made in the States.” In an earlier on-the-record statement, Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung told The Washington Post that the Supreme Court “got it right when they ruled this is an issue that should be decided at the state level.” This statement contradicted that claim.
