The owner of Facebook, Meta, has issued a security report warning that hackers are exploiting the popularity of the artificial intelligence-powered tool ChatGPT to gain illicit access to user devices. According to the report, hackers are using malware-infected browser extensions and online app stores to distribute ChatGPT-based tools. This is comparable to the rise of cryptocurrency-related scams, in which hackers exploit the global interest in cryptocurrencies to breach into people’s devices.
ChatGPT is the New Cryptographic Standard for Hackers
Guy Rosen, Meta’s chief information security officer, compared ChatGPT to the rise in cryptocurrency scams, stating, “From the perspective of bad actors, ChatGPT is the new cryptocurrency.” Since the technology’s initial rise in prominence, fraudsters have moved swiftly to take advantage of its appeal. Meta has blocked over a thousand malicious web addresses that purported to be associated with ChatGPT or related tools since March.
Infected ChatGPT Tools
While some ChatGPT tools contain functional features, they also contain malicious code that infects users’ devices. Meta stated that it had “investigated and taken action against malware strains taking advantage of people’s interest in OpenAI’s ChatGPT to trick them into installing malware pretending to provide AI functionality.”
Virus Campaigns Take advantage of prevalent subjects
According to Meta, malware campaigns use controversial issues and trending topics to attract people’s attention. The most recent surge of malware campaigns has taken note of the increasing popularity of generative AI tools. The purpose of these campaigns is to convince users to click on malicious URLs or download malicious software.
