UK telecoms giant BT Group has unveiled its plans to cut 55,000 jobs by the end of the decade, with the intention of incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) to take over certain tasks.
The company aims to streamline its operations and reduce costs through this workforce reduction, which forms part of a broader overhaul strategy.
BT currently employs around 130,000 workers, but expects to reduce this number to between 75,000 and 90,000 by 2030.
CEO Philip Jansen expressed the company’s vision of becoming a leaner business with a brighter future, relying on a smaller workforce and a significantly reduced cost base.
This move by BT reflects the ongoing transformation within the tech and telecom industries, as companies seek to adapt to economic challenges and leverage AI technologies to enhance efficiency and competitiveness.
In a similar vein, UK-based wireless carrier Vodafone recently announced plans to lay off 11,000 employees as part of a comprehensive restructuring effort.
