A residential building in Cairo, Egypt, collapsed on Monday, resulting in the death of eight individuals, including seven members of a single family. The public prosecution and state media confirmed the incident, describing the collapse of the building in the Hadayek al-Qubba district as complete. Civil defence workers were able to rescue nine people, including an injured woman, while the remaining eight individuals were found deceased. Five others had managed to evacuate the property before the collapse occurred.
According to testimonies provided by the injured woman and two residents, the collapse was allegedly caused by a resident who had recently demolished walls in his first-floor flat, despite objections from neighbors. In response, the public prosecution has ordered the arrest of the building’s owner, the contractor responsible for the construction work, and one of the employees involved, for further questioning.
Reports from residents in the area, as published in the government newspaper Al-Ahram, indicated that the victims comprised seven members of a single family. Building collapses in Egypt have been a recurring issue in recent years, attributed to both poor building conditions and non-compliance with building and town-planning regulations.
