A Nation on High Alert
Switzerland has been hit by severe weather, leaving at least four people dead and many more at risk. The country’s government is sounding the alarm, warning that it may not be equipped to handle future natural disasters.
A Warning from the Government
Swiss Federal Council member Ignazio Cassis has expressed concern about the accumulation of extreme weather events, which has left the country vulnerable to further disasters. “Are we going to experience one catastrophe after another every summer? Or is this an exception? Nobody knows,” he said. The warning comes as the country struggles to recover from the devastating floods.
A Series of Disasters
The latest disaster has seen three people killed in a landslide in Maggia Valley, while a man has been missing since Saturday evening. The Rhone River has burst its banks, flooding a highway and a railway line. The village of Binn has been evacuated, and part of the Visletto road bridge has collapsed.
A Growing Concern
Climate change is expected to bring more frequent and intense extreme weather events, making Switzerland’s vulnerability even more concerning. Neighboring countries have also been hit hard, with northern Italy experiencing severe flooding and landslides.
A Call to Action
As the situation remains tense, Swiss President Viola Amherd has urged citizens to take care and follow authorities’ instructions. The country’s police chief, Antonio Ciocco, has warned that more victims may be found in Ticino due to the severe weather. As Switzerland faces this crisis, it is clear that the nation must take action to prepare for and respond to future natural disasters.
