Sexual Assault, Harassment, and Racism Allegations at McDonald’s UK Outlets.

More than 100 current and former staff members at McDonald’s outlets in the UK have come forward with allegations of sexual assault, harassment, racism, and bullying, according to an investigation. The victims, some as young as 17, reported routine incidents of groping and harassment in the workplace. The UK equality watchdog has expressed concern over the findings and is launching a dedicated email hotline to address the issue. McDonald’s has acknowledged that it has “fallen short” and has issued a deep apology, emphasizing the importance of providing a safe and inclusive work environment for all employees.

The investigation was initiated after McDonald’s signed a legally binding agreement with the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) to combat sexual harassment. However, the investigation uncovered a starkly different reality. Out of over 100 allegations from employees, 31 related to sexual assault and 78 to sexual harassment. Additionally, there were 18 allegations of racism and six of homophobia. Many of these incidents involved managers and senior staff members who failed to take appropriate action upon receiving complaints.

The victims shared their experiences, which included instances of racial slurs, sexual advances, explicit images, and pressure for sexual acts. Some workers described feeling constantly judged based on their appearance, while others were forced to wear uniforms that were too tight. The toxic work environment affected the mental well-being of young employees, who often faced zero-hour contracts and had limited job security.

McDonald’s, one of the UK’s largest private-sector employers with over 170,000 staff, pledged “zero tolerance” for sexual harassment and committed to delivering training for employees. However, workers have criticized the company for not taking the training seriously, with reports of managers rushing through the videos or failing to implement the training effectively. The company’s culture and handling of workplace issues have come under scrutiny globally, with ongoing sexual harassment lawsuits in the US and previous allegations in the UK.

McDonald’s UK & Ireland CEO, Alistair Macrow, stated that there is no place for harassment, abuse, or discrimination within the company. McDonald’s is committed to investigating all allegations and enforcing strict measures, including dismissal, for proven breaches of its code of conduct. Macrow highlighted the completion of awareness training by over 2,000 managers and the implementation of new protections to ensure a safe and respectful workplace. However, the revelations from the investigation indicate the need for further action to address the systemic issues within the organization and protect the well-being of its employees.
