Microsoft CEO denies claims of direct control
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has countered Elon Musk’s recent statement that Microsoft exerts control over OpenAI, a partner organization co-founded by Musk. Nadella, in an interview with CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin, stated that it is “factually not correct” to assert Microsoft’s control over OpenAI. Musk had previously claimed that Microsoft has a strong say in OpenAI’s operations.
OpenAI’s commitment to nonprofit governance
Nadella emphasized that OpenAI is guided by a nonprofit board and remains committed to its mission. While acknowledging his respect for Musk, Nadella clarified that Microsoft maintains a noncontrolling interest in OpenAI. He highlighted the strong commercial partnership between the two entities.
OpenAI’s evolution and Microsoft’s involvement
Initially established as a nonprofit in 2015, OpenAI underwent structural changes in 2019, forming a capped-profit entity known as OpenAI LP. Microsoft’s involvement increased with a multiyear, multibillion-dollar investment announced in January, marking the third phase of the partnership. Microsoft has been integrating OpenAI’s advanced AI technologies, such as GPT-4, into its products and services.
Nadella’s outlook on AI development and Microsoft’s approach
Nadella acknowledged the rapid progress in AI development but emphasized the importance of responsible and human-centric implementation. He expressed confidence in Microsoft’s approach of keeping humans in the loop, ensuring that AI is a tool that augments human capabilities rather than replacing them.
