New Jury President Named

The prestigious Berlin Film Festival, known as the Berlinale, has appointed Academy Award-winning and Tony-nominated actor Lupita Nyong’o as the Jury President for its 2024 edition. Nyong’o, of Mexican-Kenyan descent, succeeds Kristen Stewart, who served as the Jury President for the 2023 Berlinale.

Versatility and Recognition in Cinema

Berlinale directors Mariëtte Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian expressed their enthusiasm about Lupita Nyong’o’s appointment, highlighting her embodiment of qualities valued in cinema. They emphasized her versatility in embracing diverse projects, addressing different audiences, and maintaining consistency in portraying recognizable characters. Nyong’o gained widespread recognition for her breakout role in Steve McQueen’s “12 Years A Slave,” earning her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Her filmography includes major blockbusters such as the Star Wars sequel trilogy, The Jungle Book, both Black Panther films, and a lead role in Jordan Peele’s “Us.”

A Respected Presence On and Off Stage

Beyond her film accomplishments, Lupita Nyong’o has received acclaim on the stage, earning a Tony nomination for her role in the Broadway play ‘Eclipsed’ by Danai Gurira. Her ability to excel in both film and theatre contributes to her standing as a respected and versatile artist.

Leadership Changes at Berlinale

The Berlinale has not only introduced a new Jury President but also announced Tricia Tuttle as the festival’s new director. Tuttle takes over from Mariëtte Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian, who served as co-artistic and executive directors since 2020. Prior to this role, Tuttle spent five years as the director of the BFI, where she significantly increased attendance at the annual festival before stepping down in 2022.

Recap of 2023 Berlinale Success

The 2023 Berlinale, held in February, recognized Nicolas Philibert’s film “Sur l’Adamant” (On the Adamant) with the Golden Bear, the festival’s highest honor. Christian Petzold received the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize for his film “Afire.” As Lupita Nyong’o takes on her role as Jury President, anticipation builds for the cinematic experiences and recognitions the 2024 Berlin Film Festival will bring.
