Kuwait News introduces its first AI virtual news presenter

Kuwait News has launched its first-ever AI-generated news presenter named Fedha. The blonde-haired, light-eyed virtual anchor reflects the diversity of the country’s population, according to the deputy editor-in-chief for Kuwait News. The AI anchor’s debut video generated reactions on social media, with some praising the innovation while others raised concerns about the ethics of using AI in newsrooms.

Replacing human anchors with AI: risks and benefits

The rise of AI globally has sparked concerns about its potential to spread disinformation and erode trust in mainstream media. Kuwait ranked 158 out of 180 countries in the Reporters Without Borders 2022 World Press Freedom Index, with experts raising questions about whether replacing humans with AI could lead to less freedom of expression for reporters in the country.

Brandi Geurkink, a strategy and technology advisor at Reset, expressed her concerns about the adoption of AI in news broadcasting, which she believes makes it more complicated and blurs the lines even further. However, a report published by Goldman Sachs last month said AI could replace the equivalent of 300 million full-time jobs around the world, suggesting that the technology may also create new jobs and increase productivity.

AI in the news industry: a controversial topic

Kuwait is not the first country to introduce an AI-generated news presenter, with China’s state news agency unveiling its own virtual anchor in 2018. While AI presents new and innovative content opportunities, its adoption in the news industry raises ethical questions and concerns about its impact on press freedom and accuracy.

The debate on the use of AI in newsrooms is ongoing, with some seeing it as a way to streamline the news creation process and improve productivity while others worry that it will lead to the loss of jobs and distort the public’s perception of the truth.
