How to Check if You’re Being Tracked by an AirTag

Apple’s AirTag, a Bluetooth tracker, is used to locate lost commonplace objects; however, it has been abused as a stalking device, prompting police departments to issue warnings about its potential criminal applications. Apple released firmware updates to prevent misuse in 2022. The vastness of Apple’s ecosystem distinguishes the device from rivals, and the US Drug Enforcement Administration has used it to monitor drug shipments and even locate a stolen car and kill the suspect. Depending on the type of smartphone you own, you may be able to detect a tracker if you suspect that you are being monitored without your permission.

The owners of iPhones operating iOS 14.5 or later should receive a push notification whenever an unidentified AirTag is in close proximity for an extended period of time and is not with its owner. iPhone owners with a more recent model should enable Bluetooth and review their settings to ensure that they will receive notifications. Apple launched the Tracker Detect app for Android phones months after the release of the AirTag, but it does not automatically search for unknown AirTags; users must initiate a scan.

If you lack a smartphone, you must rely on visual and audible indications to locate any hidden AirTags. The white circular disc is slightly larger than a quarter, and it may emanate a beeping sound if separated from its owner for more than 24 hours. The ideal method for deactivating an AirTag is to remove its battery. Apple’s support page recommends contacting the police if you believe you are in a potentially hazardous situation.

Eva Galperin, the director of cybersecurity at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, does not trust the use of Bluetooth scanners to locate AirTags. Although some YouTube DIY instructions demonstrate how to disable the speaker, it is not advised to do so, and for a brief time, noiseless trackers were available on Etsy.
