Chevrolet made history with the sale of the first hybrid Corvette E-Ray at the Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach auction, where it fetched a staggering $1,100,000. Rick Hendrick, owner of a NASCAR team and a car dealer, made the transaction, paying over ten times its list price. Donors Choose is a charity that helps public schools acquire supplies and project materials.
The Corvette E-Ray, with its all-wheel-drive hybrid powertrain, is the fastest General Motors vehicle ever. Its electric motor drives the front axles, and another motor assists its 6.2-liter V8 engine to produce a total of 655 horsepower. The vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 2.5 seconds and complete a quarter-mile in 10.5 seconds.
The Corvette E-Ray’s 1,900-watt-hour battery pack enables it to travel limited distances in an all-electric Stealth mode. Chevrolet states that the hybrid technology of the vehicle is predominantly designed for high performance.
Rick Hendrick, who paid $3,600,000 for the first mid-engine Corvette Z06 last year, will receive his new vehicle this summer, when Corvette E-Ray deliveries are scheduled to begin.
Overall, the sale of the Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray at such a high price for a charitable cause is a significant milestone that demonstrates the potential of hybrid technology for high-performance automobiles and the significance of philanthropy.
