Yahya Sinwar, a Gazan, is recognized as one of the central figures bridging the gap between Hamas’ political and military wings. Elected as the commander of the organization’s armed forces and overall leader in Gaza in 2017, Sinwar has a history of multiple arrests by Israel, eventually being released as part of a prisoner exchange in 2011. The United States had previously designated him as a terrorist in 2015.
Involvement in Conflict and UK Sanctions
Sinwar is reported to have played a role in the October 7 attack that triggered the ongoing conflict with Israel. The UK took action against him in December, imposing sanctions alongside other senior Hamas leaders. Hamas has long been designated a terrorist organization by the EU and other Western allies.
Continued EU Sanctions Against Hamas Leaders
Yahya Sinwar becomes the third senior Hamas leader to face personal sanctions from the EU since the Middle East conflict erupted in October. Mohammed Deif and Marwan Issa, senior commanders of Hamas’ military wing, were also designated as terrorists by EU member states on December 8. These sanctions aim to curtail Hamas’ financial resources and prevent its militants from orchestrating further attacks.
