Adidas Faces Lawsuit Over Kanye West Deal: Investors Claim Brand Failed to Act on His “Problematic Behavior”

Investors are suing Adidas over its partnership with the rapper Kanye West, claiming the company was aware of his problematic conduct prior to the end of their collaboration. According to the investors, Adidas failed to limit financial losses and take precautionary measures to limit their exposure. As a result of West’s antisemitic remarks, Adidas terminated their partnership in October of 2020. The rapper is not a defendant in the complaint. Adidas stated that it will “take all necessary measures” to defend itself vigorously.

Adidas allegedly was aware of West’s problematic conduct.

Investors filed the lawsuit against Adidas in the United States, alleging that the company was aware of West’s other dubious behaviour. The investors assert that former CEO Kasper Rorsted and other members of management discussed the alleged misconduct. The Wall Street Journal reported on an alleged encounter between Adidas and Kanye West in 2018. Senior executives reportedly discussed how to mitigate the risk of employees interacting with the performer, as well as the possibility of severing ties with him.

Adidas severing ties with West

As a result of West’s anti-Semitic remarks, Adidas terminated its partnership with him in 2016. Adidas stated that it does not tolerate antisemitism or other forms of hate speech. Ye’s recent remarks and actions are unacceptable, hateful, and dangerous, and they contravene the company’s diversity and inclusion, mutual respect, and fairness values. Adidas has launched an investigation following reports that West created a “toxic environment” at the company since the end of their collaboration.

Adidas takes complaints very seriously

Rolling Stone published excerpts from an open letter by Adidas employees asserting that the company’s leaders were aware of West’s “problematic behaviour” but “turned off their moral compass.” Adidas responded that it was unclear whether the anonymous letter’s allegations were genuine. The company stated that it would conduct an independent investigation into the allegations. West’s Instagram and Twitter accounts were suspended in October 2020 after he made antisemitic remarks and received censure for them.
