Liverpool City Region has launched a new initiative aimed at addressing digital inequality in the borough of Halton, Cheshire, where almost 40% of the population has poor digital skills. The scheme, led by Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram, aims to provide free tablets, internet access, and training to hundreds of residents to bridge the digital divide. Over the next year, 500 tablets, along with training and mobile internet access, will be distributed as part of this effort.
Addressing Digital Exclusion for Improved Prospects
The Liverpool City Region initiative seeks to combat digital exclusion in Halton and enhance the prospects of residents. The scheme is part of a larger five-year project that involves collaboration between local councils, the voluntary sector, and private organizations. In addition to Halton, the initiative plans to distribute 4,250 tablets across the broader city region, which encompasses Knowsley, St Helens, Wirral, Sefton, and Liverpool.
Low Digital Proficiency and Inclusive Training
Lloyds Banking Group’s 2022 Essential Digital Skills Survey revealed that approximately 37% of Halton residents have “low or very low” levels of online proficiency. To address this issue, the initiative will provide tablets and training to residents referred through the Department of Work and Pensions’ Restart Scheme and the Ways to Work program. In-person digital inclusion group training sessions will also be offered to ensure that residents are equipped with the necessary skills.
Creating a Better-Connected Future
Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram emphasized the importance of connectivity and technology in today’s world and the need to ensure that no one is left behind due to digital exclusion. He stated that the initiative aims to directly target those who need support the most, ultimately leading to a better-connected future for the entire region. The University of Liverpool’s analysis revealed that a significant portion of working-age residents across the Liverpool City Region has limited internet use or does not use it at all. This initiative strives to address this gap and empower residents with essential digital skills.
