Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has spoken exclusively with the BBC about the security situation in Ukraine and preparations for a counteroffensive against Russian forces. Zelenskyy has pledged to give Russia an “unpleasant surprise” when the anticipated counteroffensive begins. Zelenskyy acknowledged that Ukraine is still awaiting the delivery of more weapons from its Western partners. He emphasized that while the appropriate armoured equipment is expected to arrive in parts, it will take more time. Zelenskyy said that his forces will not be able to advance until they have the necessary equipment, as moving forward without it would result in the loss of many lives.
Zelenskyy refused to reveal when the counteroffensive will begin, as he believes that such information would prepare the enemy. However, he reassured the public that the approach will be simple, and that his forces will do everything they can to make the enemy run. Zelenskyy did caution, however, that the full sovereignty of Ukraine may not be immediately restored after the counteroffensive, as it is still a war.
It is worth noting that tensions have been high between Russia and Ukraine since 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine. Since then, fighting has continued between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed separatists in the Donbas region. Despite various ceasefire agreements, sporadic fighting has persisted, with each side accusing the other of violating the truces.
