What is West Nile Virus?
West Nile virus (WNV) is a potentially deadly virus spread by mosquitoes, and cases have recently been reported in Spain and Italy. The virus can cause a fatal neurological disease in humans and is typically spread by mosquitoes and, in rare cases, through blood transfusions or organ donations.
Symptoms of West Nile Virus
Most people who contract WNV won’t experience symptoms, but in 20% of cases, it can develop into West Nile fever. Symptoms include high fever, headache, neck stiffness, and a rash on the neck, arms, or legs. In severe cases, it can lead to seizures, muscle weakness, and paralysis. People over 50 and those with underlying health conditions are more likely to develop serious illness.
How to Protect Yourself
There is no vaccine against WNV, so prevention is key. Avoid traveling to affected areas during peak mosquito hours, use insect repellent, cover exposed skin, and keep mosquitoes out of your bedroom at night. If you experience symptoms after traveling, contact your doctor and report your recent travel history.
The Connection to Climate Change
Record-high temperatures and extreme weather events driven by climate change are creating favorable conditions for mosquitoes to spread diseases like WNV and dengue fever in Europe. Locally acquired dengue cases almost doubled between 2022 and 2023, and the risk of imported cases and local outbreaks is expected to increase.
Where are Infections Most Likely in Europe?
Dengue-carrying tiger mosquitoes are established in 13 European countries, including Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, and Spain. The ECDC warns that the mosquito responsible for transmitting dengue and Zika virus is spreading further north, east, and west in Europe and has recently established itself in Cyprus.
Stay Informed
With the increasing risk of mosquito-borne illnesses in Europe, it’s essential to stay informed about the latest outbreaks and take necessary precautions to protect yourself. Remember to check with your doctor if you experience symptoms after traveling abroad and report your recent travel history.
