Pope’s First Response to Readers
The inaugural issue of “Piazza San Pietro” comprises 86 pages and includes a heartfelt letter from Pope Francis to a concerned grandmother regarding her unbaptized grandchild. The Pope articulates that while baptizing a child reflects trust in the Lord, it cannot be forced upon parents who are unwilling. He encourages ongoing dialogue infused with hope, gentleness, and charity, emphasizing the importance of understanding in such situations.
Cardinal Gambetti Highlights the Initiative
During the launch speech, Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, the archpriest of St. Peter’s Basilica, praised the magazine as a courageous venture driven by the innovative spirit of Father Enzo Fortunato, the communications director. Fortunato accentuated Pope Francis’ call for journalists to engage more deeply with communities, underscoring the Vatican’s commitment to traditional journalism that connects directly with individuals, stories, and realities.
Accessible Subscription and Free Copies
“Piazza San Pietro” will be subscription-based, priced at €30 per month or €4 for a single issue. Father Fortunato reassured that those who face financial challenges will receive the magazine for free, ensuring the content is accessible to a wider audience. This approach reflects the Vatican’s dedication to inclusivity and outreach.
Livestream and Social Media Engagement
In addition to the magazine, the Vatican announced plans for a livestream showcasing the tomb of St. Peter located in the grottoes, along with the basilica’s Holy Door. This initiative will allow those unable to travel to Rome to participate virtually during the Jubilee. Pope Francis will inaugurate the livestream on December 2. Furthermore, St. Peter’s Basilica intends to utilize social media platforms to spread awareness and appreciation for this sacred site, as the Catholic Church prepares for the significant 2025 Jubilee, set to attract around 32 million pilgrims to Rome from December 24, 2024, to January 6, 2026.
