The US Coast Guard announced on Sunday that it has initiated an investigation into the cause of the underwater implosion that resulted in the destruction of the small submersible Titan and the tragic loss of all five individuals on board during a dive to the Titanic wreck. The Coast Guard has established a marine board of investigation (MBI), the highest level of probe, to thoroughly examine this incident and its global implications.
Jason Neubauer, the Coast Guard’s chief investigator and leader of the probe, stated during a press conference in Boston that his primary objective is to prevent similar occurrences by recommending necessary measures to enhance maritime safety worldwide. He added that the MBI is currently in the early stage of collecting evidence, including salvage operations at the incident site.
Neubauer further explained that the US investigation may also provide recommendations regarding potential civil or criminal sanctions, if deemed necessary.
The submersible Titan was reported missing the previous Sunday, and on Thursday, the Coast Guard confirmed the deaths of all five individuals on board after the vessel experienced a catastrophic implosion. A debris field was discovered on the seafloor, approximately 1,600 feet (500 meters) from the bow of the Titanic, which rests more than two miles (nearly four kilometers) beneath the ocean’s surface and 400 miles off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.
Canada, which participated in the search for the submersible, announced on Saturday that it is conducting its own investigation. The Canadian-flagged Polar Prince cargo vessel had towed the Titan out to sea the previous weekend but lost contact with it approximately one hour and 45 minutes after the submersible was deployed into the ocean depths.
The announcement of the implosion marked the conclusion of a multinational search-and-rescue operation that garnered global attention following the disappearance of the tourist craft.
