CMA Investigates Possible Competition Issues
The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is scrutinizing the relationship between Alphabet, Google’s parent company, and AI firm Anthropic. The CMA aims to determine if their partnership constitutes a “relevant merger situation” and whether it might significantly reduce competition in the UK’s AI industry.
Google’s Major Investment
Last October, Google agreed to invest up to $2 billion (€1.85 billion) in Anthropic, adding to its existing 10 percent stake in the company. This move comes as Anthropic’s chatbot, Claude, competes with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, further highlighting the high stakes in the AI sector.
Anthropic’s Stance on Independence
Anthropic has stated its intention to fully cooperate with the investigation, emphasizing that Google’s investment does not compromise its independence or its ability to form other strategic partnerships. The AI firm insists that its corporate governance remains autonomous despite these significant investments.
CMA’s Broader Concerns
This investigation is not the first of its kind. The CMA is also examining Amazon’s investment of up to $4 billion (€3.70 billion) in Anthropic. Earlier, the CMA investigated Microsoft’s €15 billion investment in France’s Mistral AI but found insufficient evidence to continue. CMA CEO Sarah Cardell has expressed concerns about how numerous partnerships among major tech firms might impact competition.

Cardell highlighted the challenge of leveraging advanced technology for broad benefits while preventing market power exploitation and unintended consequences. The CMA’s ongoing investigations reflect these concerns, as they continue to monitor the actions of tech giants like Google, Apple, Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, and NVIDIA in the AI space.
