Trump asserted that recent polls indicated he had “legendary” support compared to other hopefuls seeking the party’s nomination for the 2024 election. Although it remains uncertain whether he will skip all the debates for the Republican primaries, the first primary debate is scheduled for August 23, with voting commencing in Iowa on January 15, 2024.
Consistent polling results have consistently positioned Trump as the frontrunner for the Republican nomination. He made this decision public on his Truth Social platform, emphasizing his successful presidency and his leadership in the polls as reasons for not participating in the debates. A CBS News poll, a partner of the BBC, showed Florida Governor Ron DeSantis trailing significantly behind Trump, reinforcing his popularity within the party.
In the lead-up to this announcement, Trump had already suggested on multiple occasions that he might not take part in the Republican debates. Instead of participating, Trump is expected to sit for a pre-recorded interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, which may be aired during the first debate in Milwaukee on Wednesday.
This choice to skip the debate has drawn criticism from one of his Republican rivals, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who challenged Trump to demonstrate his commitment to his nomination bid. Republican candidates must meet certain criteria to participate in the debate, including receiving donations from at least 40,000 individuals and obtaining a minimum of 1% support in reputable polling.
As Trump navigates his potential presidential campaign, he also faces legal challenges. The same week as the first Republican debate, he is required to voluntarily appear in Fulton County, Georgia, to address charges related to his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results in the state. Trump is facing numerous criminal charges and will face trial multiple times in the coming months as he campaigns for the 2024 US presidential election. These charges include allegations of illegal possession of classified files in Florida and spreading false election claims in Washington DC.
