Migrant Boat Capsizes in Drina River
A tragic incident unfolded on the Drina River as a boat carrying around 30 illegal migrants capsized during an attempted crossing from Serbia to Bosnia-Herzegovina. The boat, heavily burdened with passengers seeking a better life, overturned, leading to a devastating outcome.
Eight Dead, Several Missing
At least eight migrants lost their lives in the accident, with more individuals still unaccounted for. Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic confirmed the grim news, stating that local authorities in Bosnia and a concerned citizen alerted Serbian police early Thursday morning about the disaster.
Survivors’ Struggle to Safety
Out of the estimated 30 people onboard, 18 managed to survive by reaching the Bosnian shore. Among the survivors, 16 are reported to be Syrian nationals, while the remaining two are from Egypt. Alarmingly, the boat was also carrying 10 minors at the time of the accident, intensifying the gravity of the situation.
Rescue Efforts Underway
Rescue operations are in full swing as civil defense teams, border police from both Bosnia and Serbia, divers, and firefighters scour the riverbanks in search of any remaining survivors. The dense forested area along the river complicates the rescue efforts, but authorities remain determined to find those still missing.
Dangerous Journeys in Pursuit of a Better Life
This tragedy highlights the perilous journey many migrants endure while attempting to reach the European Union via the Balkan land route. Fleeing war and poverty, these individuals often rely on smugglers to cross borders illegally, hoping for a chance at a better future in wealthier European nations.
