Despite recent concessions from the European Union (EU), thousands of Spanish farmers gathered in Madrid on Sunday, accompanied by tractors, to voice their discontent with EU agricultural policies. Polish farmers also participated, staging a blockade on a key highway leading to Germany.
Dispute Over Attendance Figures
Organizers estimated the protest’s attendance at 1,000 people, while the government’s count stood at 450 farmers. The demonstration commenced at the Ministry of Ecology Transition, culminating outside the Agriculture Ministry headquarters, underscoring farmers’ grievances regarding bureaucratic hurdles and environmental regulations.
Challenges to the “Green Transition”
Many protesters expressed opposition to the EU’s “Green Transition” agenda, highlighting concerns that environmental protection measures render their produce less competitive against imports from outside the EU. They argue that such policies exacerbate bureaucratic burdens, particularly for small and medium-sized farms.
Polish Farmers Join the Protest
Polish farmers lent their support to the demonstration, obstructing a crucial highway connecting Poland to Germany in Swiecko. With an average daily traffic of 17,000 trucks, the blockade underscored widespread dissatisfaction with EU agricultural policies across member states.
Demand for Adequate Measures
Farmers, like Luis González from Spain, emphasized the need for measures aligning environmental protection goals with the economic sustainability of farms. Despite recent concessions by Spain and the European Commission, farmers contend that these actions fall short of addressing their fundamental concerns, including the enforcement of fair pricing regulations in the face of escalating consumer prices.
