Deadly Rocket Attack on Lviv, Ukraine

A Russian rocket struck an apartment building in Lviv, western Ukraine, resulting in the deaths of at least four people, including a 21-year-old woman and a 95-year-old woman. The attack also left 34 people injured and caused extensive destruction to civilian infrastructure in the city. The mayor of Lviv described it as one of the most significant attacks on the city. Lviv regional head Maksym Kozytskyi stated that over 30 houses had been destroyed. The Russian military has not commented on the reported attack.

President Zelensky Vows Response

President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the assault by “Russian terrorists” and promised a substantial response. He expressed his determination to address the overnight attack. Kozytskyi emphasized the tragic loss of young lives and the impact on the future of Ukraine, while also highlighting the death of a 95-year-old survivor of World War Two.

Rescue Efforts and Damage Assessment

Emergency services are working to clear debris and rescue individuals who may be trapped under the rubble. Kozytskyi expressed disappointment that only a few people sought shelter in a nearby safe location during the missile attack. The situation is still being assessed, with ongoing efforts to provide assistance and support to affected residents.

Witness Accounts and Routine Response

Dr Sasha Dovzhyk, who is currently in Lviv, described her experience hiding in the bathroom when the air raid siren sounded. She emphasized that such precautions were part of the routine for Ukrainians during these attacks. The impact of the missile on a residential building 2km away caused the walls to shake, indicating a significant force.

Previous Attacks and Ongoing Conflict

Russia has been carrying out missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities for months, often targeting civilian areas and causing power outages. Despite Lviv being located in western Ukraine, further from the front lines, it has not been immune to Russian attacks. Last month, critical infrastructure in Lviv was targeted in a drone attack. Last week, a restaurant and shopping center in Kramatorsk, an eastern city near Russian-occupied territories, were struck, resulting in the deaths of 13 people, including children. The ongoing conflict has led to the loss of civilian lives and widespread destruction in various parts of Ukraine.
