A blood transfusion centre in north-eastern Ukraine was hit by a Russian guided air bomb, resulting in casualties and injuries, as stated by President Volodymyr Zelensky. The incident occurred in the Kupiansk community of the Kharkiv region on Saturday night. Rescuers are currently battling a blaze caused by the strike. President Zelensky emphasized that defeating terrorists is a matter of honor for those valuing life and condemned the attackers as “beasts” seeking to destroy the essentials of living. Russia has not issued a public response regarding the reported attack.
President Zelensky expressed outrage over the attack and accused Russian aggression for the crime. However, the exact number of casualties and injuries has not been disclosed, and the BBC has not independently verified the report yet.
Kupiansk and nearby settlements were initially occupied by Russian troops during Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. However, Ukrainian forces recaptured the area in a swift counter-offensive the following September.
In addition to the attack on the blood transfusion centre, President Zelensky revealed that Russia also targeted an aeronautical company, Motor Sich, in the western Khmelnytskyi region on the same day.
Meanwhile, Russia has accused Ukraine of hitting a Russian tanker with 11 crew members in the Black Sea, marking the second sea drone attack in two days. Russian maritime officials reported damage to the engine room of the Sig tanker in the Kerch Strait, which separates Crimea (Ukraine’s annexed peninsula) and Russia’s Taman peninsula. Thankfully, no injuries were reported in this incident. Ukraine has yet to issue a public statement, but a Ukrainian security service source confirmed the use of a sea drone in the attack.
