Major Tech Players Join Voluntary AI Pact

OpenAI, Microsoft, and Amazon are among the first 100 companies to sign a voluntary AI Pact, announced by the European Commission. This initiative aims to help companies prepare for the upcoming EU AI Act, which sets new legal standards for artificial intelligence models based on their risk levels.

Tech Giants Yet to Join the Pact

While some tech giants like Meta have not yet joined, the European Commission expects the list of signatories to grow. A spokesperson noted that over 700 companies have expressed interest in becoming part of this initiative, signaling widespread industry support.

Preparations for AI Act Compliance

The AI Pact was first introduced in November 2023 as a proactive measure to help companies transition smoothly to the AI Act. It offers workshops through the EU’s AI Office, allowing businesses to share strategies and insights on complying with the new legislation.

Core Commitments and Collaboration

The Pact focuses on encouraging the voluntary adoption of AI in industries, identifying systems likely to be classified as high-risk, and promoting AI literacy. It is designed to ease businesses into the new regulations by fostering collaboration and shared knowledge.

Additional Pledges from Signatories

Beyond the core commitments, over half of the companies involved have pledged to go further. These additional promises include ensuring human oversight of AI, reducing risks, and clearly labeling AI-generated content like deepfakes to maintain transparency.

OpenAI’s Commitment to Responsible AI

Sandro Gianella, OpenAI’s head of policy for Europe and the Middle East, expressed the company’s pride in supporting the Pact. He emphasized that OpenAI’s mission to deliver safe and advanced technology aligns with the Pact’s core priorities.

Snap Joins for Trustworthy AI Development

Snap also joined the Pact, stating that its values align with the AI Act’s goal of fostering trustworthy AI development. The company stressed its commitment to ethical AI practices as it supports the broader industry initiative.

Timeline for AI Act Implementation

The AI Act, the world’s first legal framework regulating AI, came into effect in August 2024. General-purpose AI rules will take effect one year after the law’s adoption, with high-risk systems facing stricter obligations within three years, setting a new standard for the AI industry.
