Following a disappointing outcome at the Chinese Grand Prix, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff expressed frustration, labeling the team’s performance as “not good enough.” With George Russell finishing sixth and Lewis Hamilton ninth, the team struggled to compete at the Shanghai International Circuit, despite their past success at the venue.

Challenges in Car Setup

Mercedes, known for their dominance in Formula One, faced significant setbacks during the race weekend. Wolff revealed that the team’s pre-race simulations had predicted the sixth and ninth-place finishes based on the car’s setup after the sprint. However, adjustments made following Saturday’s sprint race failed to deliver the desired performance improvements.

Hamilton’s Struggles

Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, voiced concerns during the race about the car’s handling, citing issues with responsiveness and cornering ability, particularly in slow corners. Starting from the 18th position on the grid, Hamilton faced challenges throughout the race, struggling to make significant progress due to the car’s limitations.

Focus on Fundamental Improvements

Wolff emphasized the importance of prioritizing fundamental improvements over quick fixes. He cautioned against seeking a “silver bullet” solution each weekend and stressed the need to address basic issues to enhance the car’s overall performance. Analyzing race data, Wolff highlighted deficiencies in the car’s handling, indicating areas that require attention.

Looking Ahead to Miami Race

Despite the setback in China, Wolff remained optimistic about the team’s prospects in the upcoming race in Miami. He revealed plans for an improvement package aimed at enhancing the car’s competitiveness. With the midfield competition intensifying, Wolff acknowledged the significance of incremental improvements in securing better finishing positions in future races.
