Mass Exodus from Southern Lebanon

Thousands of Lebanese residents fled the southern region of the country on Monday as Israeli airstrikes intensified, killing hundreds and injuring over a thousand. Following a heavy exchange of fire with Hezbollah, Israel’s military warned residents in southern and eastern Lebanon to evacuate ahead of further attacks. This marks the largest exodus from southern Lebanon since the 2006 conflict, with highways jammed as people rushed to Beirut.

Heavy Casualties Amid Airstrikes

Lebanon’s health ministry reported at least 274 deaths and over 1,000 injuries from the airstrikes, including children and emergency workers. The strikes follow an ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah that has claimed hundreds of lives, predominantly fighters but also civilians. Monday’s death toll represents one of the deadliest days in nearly a year of fighting between the two forces.

Israeli Military Expands Offensive

The Israeli military, targeting Hezbollah strongholds, claimed to have hit 300 sites and promised tougher action in the coming days. Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi approved further strikes, emphasizing Israel’s commitment to neutralizing Hezbollah. Residents of several towns in southern Lebanon shared images of missile strikes on populated areas, while Israel urged civilians to evacuate areas storing Hezbollah’s weapons.

Warnings and Rising Tensions

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) issued warnings to Lebanese civilians, advising them to avoid areas housing Hezbollah militants and weapons. As Israeli airstrikes continued, more civilians in southern Lebanon were wounded, and additional casualties were reported in regions like Baalbek and Byblos. Despite the escalating violence, there is no immediate sign of a mass exodus from these heavily populated areas.

Conflict Escalates Following Rocket Barrage

Hezbollah’s recent rocket barrage into northern Israel, which included over 100 rockets and drones, heightened tensions. This attack came in retaliation for an Israeli airstrike that killed a Hezbollah military commander and several civilians. The situation remains volatile, with both sides exchanging increasingly lethal strikes and little indication of de-escalation.
