Borrell’s Farewell Tour

Josep Borrell, the outgoing EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, recently concluded a significant visit to Latvia. This trip marks one of his final official engagements in his current role. Borrell’s visit underscores his focus on regional security and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, as well as the importance of defense investments.

Meetings with Latvian Leaders

During his visit, Borrell met with key Latvian officials, including Minister of Foreign Affairs Baiba Braže and Minister of Defence Andris Sprūds. They discussed crucial topics such as the impact of Russia’s war against Ukraine and the need for a unified response to Russian aggression. Borrell emphasized the urgency of providing ‘more and quicker’ support to Ukraine and highlighted the strategic necessity for the EU to enhance its defensive capabilities.

Latvia’s Commitment to Security

Braže expressed gratitude for Borrell’s steadfast support for Ukraine and his contributions towards peace and stability in Europe. She also briefed Borrell on her recent inspection of Latvia’s eastern border, noting the effective implementation of sanctions and stringent border controls to prevent circumvention through routes to Russia and Belarus.

Tour of Latvian Military Facilities

Borrell’s visit included a tour of Camp Ādaži Military Base near Riga. There, he met with NATO’s multinational battle group commanders and interacted with soldiers from the Spanish contingent. This visit highlighted Latvia’s dedication to defense and its collaborative efforts within NATO.

Comparing EU Defense Efforts

Borrell’s Latvian visit followed a similar trip to Estonia, where he met with caretaker Prime Minister Kaja Kallas. In both countries, Borrell praised their defense capabilities and military preparedness. He noted Estonia’s substantial contributions to Ukraine and its efforts to expand its defense industry. Kallas, poised to succeed Borrell as the EU High Representative, continues to strengthen the region’s defense posture.
