Convicted Moroccan Deported by Italy

Italy has expelled a 35-year-old Moroccan man, already on the country’s terrorism watch list, after he was convicted of multiple crimes against people and property. The man, previously known for a knife attack in France during which he shouted “Allahu Akbar,” was deported to Morocco on August 29. Italian authorities closely monitored him due to his links to violent activities.

Transfer to Moroccan Authorities

The deportation was executed by the police in Lucca, who directly accompanied the man to Casablanca, Morocco, where he was handed over to local authorities. Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi confirmed the deportation via a social media post, emphasizing the significance of removing individuals deemed a threat to public safety.

Prior Criminal Activities in Italy

The expelled individual had recently been arrested for severe crimes in Italy, including a robbery knife attack in Lucca last May. The attack resulted in severe injuries to three victims, with one suffering a permanent facial deformity. Due to the gravity of these offenses, the man was placed under constant surveillance by Italy’s Digos anti-terrorism unit.

Court Decision and Deportation

After his appeal was denied in court on Thursday, Italian authorities proceeded with his deportation. His residence permit was not renewed, leading to his removal by specialized State Police personnel. The action reflects Italy’s ongoing commitment to expel individuals convicted of serious crimes, particularly those linked to terrorism.

Pattern of Expulsions from Italy

This expulsion is not an isolated incident. Italy has previously deported several Moroccan nationals involved in criminal or extremist activities. In June, another Moroccan man, Idriss Farhane, was deported for cybercrimes, and in 2020, a Moroccan imam was expelled for supporting the Islamic State group, underscoring Italy’s firm stance on maintaining national security.
