Houthi Drone Attack Spurs Israeli Response

In response to a Houthi drone attack that killed one person in Tel Aviv, the Israeli military targeted several sites in western Yemen. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the strikes in the port city of Hodeidah were a direct retaliation for “hundreds of attacks” carried out against Israel in recent months.

Significant Damage and Casualties

The strikes hit multiple “military targets,” according to the IDF. Houthi officials reported that oil storage facilities and a power plant were among the damaged sites, with preliminary counts indicating 80 people wounded, many suffering severe burns. Other health officials confirmed fatalities and additional injuries, though exact numbers were not specified.

Escalating Tensions in the Region

This attack marks Israel’s first strike on Yemeni soil since the onset of the Israel-Hamas conflict in October. The strikes risk opening a new front in the region as Israel contends with Iran-backed proxies, including Hezbollah in Lebanon and various militia groups in Syria. A Houthi spokesperson condemned the Israeli action as “blatant aggression,” vowing retaliation.

Netanyahu’s Stance on Iranian Influence

In a televised address, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described Hodeidah as a significant entry point for Iranian weapons into Yemen, underscoring the port’s strategic importance. He likened the Houthis to other Iranian-backed groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah, urging the international community to intensify efforts against Iran and its allies to protect global peace and navigation.

Continued Houthi Attacks

The Israeli response followed a Houthi drone attack on central Tel Aviv near the U.S. Embassy, which resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries. The Houthis have claimed responsibility for several attacks on Israel, citing solidarity with the Palestinian cause. They have also targeted shipping in the Red Sea, often affecting vessels with no ties to Israel.
