Global Corporations Embrace AI

Hasbro, the renowned publisher of tabletop games like Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering, has joined the AI revolution with its recent collaboration with Xplored, the developers behind the digital board game platform Teburu.

AI-Driven Gameplay for Players and Fans

In a press release, Adam Biehl, Hasbro’s gaming Senior VP, expressed excitement about the partnership with Xplored, highlighting the potential to deliver innovative gameplay experiences to players and fans. The collaboration aims to offer limitless digital expansions to physical games, smooth onboarding for new players, and powerful AI-driven game mechanics. The implementation of AI will enable games to react to player decisions instantly and could potentially streamline rules for a more accessible experience, especially for newcomers.

Exploring AI in Teburu’s Virtual Tabletop

Hasbro is also keen on studying Xplored’s technology, particularly its virtual tabletop solution for Dungeons & Dragons. Last year, Teburu, the digital board game platform, was unveiled, and outlets like Polygon got an exclusive playtest of its pre-alpha version. Biehl remained discreet about the specifics of AI-driven mechanics for games like D&D, mentioning that it would enrich their existing titles and potentially give rise to entirely new games.

Potential Challenges in AI Adoption

However, Hasbro’s ambitions to incorporate AI into tabletop gaming may face some obstacles. Recently, Dungeon Masters Guild, the largest third-party digital storefront for Dungeons & Dragons, announced restrictions on the sale of “standalone” AI art products. Additionally, AI-generated art featured in rulebooks and adventures must be explicitly labeled as such. Furthermore, starting from July 31, any written content primarily generated by AI would not be allowed on the platform in any form.

Awaiting Further Information

The impact of Dungeon Masters Guild’s decision on Hasbro’s AI integration remains uncertain, and it’s unknown if the Guild will adjust its stance in light of Hasbro’s partnership with Xplored. The tabletop community awaits more details during Hasbro’s earnings call, scheduled for August 3, which coincides with the start of the annual tabletop convention GenCon. This event is expected to shed more light on Hasbro’s AI plans and their potential implications for tabletop gaming.
