European Health Authorities Warn of Incoming Mpox Cases

Sweden Detects First Case of New Variant
Europe’s concern intensified after Sweden reported its first case of a new, likely more transmissible Mpox variant, known as clade Ib, outside Africa. The ECDC updated its risk assessment in response, highlighting the worsening situation in Africa, particularly in and around the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The rapid spread of the virus in these regions suggests an increased likelihood of cases being imported into Europe.
Rising Death Toll and International Response
Mpox has been spreading across several African countries since last year, with over 500 deaths, mostly in the DRC. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak a global health emergency, urging a coordinated international response.
