SpaceX Moves to Starbase
Musk revealed plans to move SpaceX from Hawthorne, California, to its rocket launch site, Starbase, in Texas. This move comes alongside the relocation of X headquarters from San Francisco to Austin. Musk criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom’s new law as the “final straw” that prompted this decision.
Previous Warnings and Actions
In his social media post, Musk mentioned that he had warned Governor Newsom about a year ago that such laws could drive families and businesses out of California. This relocation follows a similar move by Tesla in 2021, when the company transferred its corporate headquarters from Palo Alto, California, to Austin, Texas. Musk himself has also moved his residence to Texas, benefiting from the absence of state personal income tax.
SpaceX Operations in Texas
SpaceX’s relocation to Texas aligns with its ongoing operations at Boca Chica Beach, near the Mexican border. The company builds and launches its massive Starship rockets from this site, known as Starbase. SpaceX’s smaller Falcon 9 rockets continue to launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida, and southern California.
Musk’s Political Stance
Musk has increasingly voiced his political opinions, endorsing former US president Donald Trump for the 2024 election and planning significant financial contributions to a pro-Trump committee super PAC. Musk, who has a transgender daughter, has stated his support for transgender individuals but has criticized certain aspects of transgender medical treatment for minors. He believes these treatments can lead to severe, irreversible changes.
