Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur, pledged to make Twitter the most accurate source of information about the world when he took over the social media platform in October 2022. However, according to a report by AFP, he has amplified false claims from some of the most prominent disinformation accounts on the site. One such account, @KanekoaTheGreat, has promoted QAnon conspiracy theories and other disinformation. QAnon followers believe that politicians and celebrities who worship Satan control the world while engaging in pedophilia and human trafficking. On January 6, 2021, supporters of former US President Donald Trump, many of whom were QAnon followers, stormed the Capitol in Washington, DC.
Since purchasing Twitter, Elon Musk has replied to @KanekoaTheGreat at least 40 times, according to AFP. Musk also amplified a post that falsely blamed mass shootings in the US on LGBTQ+ individuals, as well as another that claimed French ex-president Francois Hollande admitted that the West overthrew the Ukrainian government during the Maidan Revolution in 2013. However, Euronews had previously fact-checked these claims and found that Hollande never said anything of the sort. In October 2022, Musk shared an article claiming that an intruder who attacked Paul Pelosi, the husband of the then United States Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, with a hammer during a home invasion burglary, did so after a drunken sexual encounter with a male prostitute.
In conclusion, despite Elon Musk’s promise to make Twitter the most accurate source of information, he has repeatedly amplified false claims from disinformation accounts on the platform.
