Amid the ongoing military coup situation in Niger, coup leaders have selected Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, an economist and former government minister, to become the country’s new prime minister. The announcement was made on national television by Colonel Major Amadou Abdramane, revealing that Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine has been appointed as Prime Minister, and Lieutenant-Colonel Habibou Assoumane has been named Commander of the Presidential Guard.
This development follows the recent ultimatum given by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to the military rulers, demanding the restoration of President Mohamed Bazoum to his rightful position. ECOWAS has not ruled out the potential use of force if their demand isn’t met.
Niger’s international partners, both from the Western world and Africa, are divided on the issue of military intervention to reinstate civilian governance. A decisive decision could be reached during the upcoming ECOWAS meeting scheduled for Thursday in Abuja, Nigeria.
President Mohamed Bazoum has remained confined to his private residence since the coup took place.
Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, born in 1965 in Zinder South, Niger, has a background in economics and has previously held ministerial roles in Niger’s governments. He has also served as a representative of the African Development Bank (AfDB) in various countries. His expertise in economics and his experience in government roles position him to lead during this uncertain period for Niger.
