Financial Strain as the School Year Begins
As children in the Czech Republic embark on a new school year, parents are feeling the financial burden. Equipping a child for school requires significant spending, from backpacks to supplies, meals, and activities. Many families, especially those with lower incomes, are struggling to keep up with these rising expenses. According to parent Hana Prokopcová, it can cost around €1,200 to prepare a child for Grade 1, not including additional costs like school meals and after-school programs.
Schools Struggle with Higher Operational Costs
Schools across the Czech Republic have tried to keep fee increases minimal, but they face their own financial challenges. Rising heating and energy prices have forced schools to raise fees for services such as after-school clubs, canteens, and kindergartens. “We had to increase our fees starting in 2023 due to higher operational costs,” explains SB Weber School Director Karel Čermák.
Support for Vulnerable Families
The escalating costs are hitting vulnerable families the hardest, particularly single parents and refugees. The Czech Republic is home to around 340,000 Ukrainian refugees, many of whom are single mothers with children. The financial strain on these families is substantial, making it difficult to afford necessary school supplies and services.
Community Efforts to Provide Relief
To help ease the burden, local initiatives like “Šatník” (“the Wardrobe”), started by journalist Nora Fridrichová in Prague, are stepping up. This community center collects donated items, including school supplies, to distribute to parents in need. “Our wardrobe is always full, but demand for school supplies is particularly high right now,” says Fridrichová. Over the next two weeks, Šatník will provide school essentials to families, aiming to ensure all children start the school year on an equal footing.
