A Legacy in Airport Retail
Colm McLoughlin, the pioneering Irish entrepreneur who transformed Dubai Duty Free into a global airport retail powerhouse, has passed away at the age of 81. Arriving in the United Arab Emirates in the early 1980s, McLoughlin spearheaded the growth of the duty-free operation, which today generates billions in revenue and welcomes millions of international travelers.
Four Decades of Innovation
McLoughlin managed Dubai Duty Free from its inception in 1983 until his retirement earlier this year, navigating the transformation of Dubai from a modest trading port to a thriving metropolis rich with iconic landmarks. Under his leadership, a vast array of duty-free goods—including electronics, alcohol, and tobacco—became accessible to travelers at Dubai International Airport, now recognized as the busiest airport for international travel globally.
A Lasting Influence
Following McLoughlin’s passing on Wednesday due to a brief illness, the newly appointed managing director of Dubai Duty Free, Ramesh Cidambi, warmly acknowledged his significant contributions. During his tenure, McLoughlin expanded the business to a $2 billion operation, employing over 6,000 people. CEO of Emirates and chair of Dubai Duty Free, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, expressed deep condolences, highlighting McLoughlin’s passion and pioneering spirit as a lasting legacy.
An Irishman in Dubai
Originally from Ballinasloe, Ireland, McLoughlin began his career in duty-free retail in 1969 at Shannon Airport. In the summer of 1983, he arrived in Dubai with a small team to establish the airport’s duty-free shop, initially intended to last just six months. His stay extended to 40 years, allowing him to play a vital role in the development of the UAE’s retail landscape, especially during recovery after the Covid pandemic, when sales rebounded dramatically.
Community and Recognition
Beyond his professional achievements, McLoughlin supported the Irish community in the UAE and received the Irish Presidential Distinguished Service Award in 2014 for his contributions. His efforts extended to sponsoring tennis and golf events, and he remained a key figure in promoting Irish interests throughout his career. He leaves behind his wife Breeda, son Niall, and daughters Tyna and Mandy, who together with their families carry forward his remarkable legacy.
