Chelsea’s forward Christopher Nkunku has undergone knee surgery that will keep him sidelined for an extended period, the Premier League club announced on Tuesday. Nkunku, the French international who joined the Blues in June from RB Leipzig for a reported £63 million ($80 million), is expected to be out for up to four months, as reported.

Nkunku was anticipated to play a pivotal role in Chelsea’s new-look squad this season under the management of Mauricio Pochettino. However, this unfortunate news comes just days before their Premier League campaign commences with a match against Liverpool on Sunday.

Chelsea issued a statement confirming the injury: “Nkunku has sustained a knee injury which will rule the forward out for an extended period. The 25-year-old has undergone an operation and will now begin a rehabilitation programme with the club’s medical department.”

The injury occurred during a pre-season friendly against Borussia Dortmund in Chicago last week. Pochettino acknowledged the pitch at Soldier Field wasn’t perfect but recognized the inherent risk of playing on surfaces designed for various sports during lucrative tours like the one Chelsea embarked on in the United States.

With Nkunku’s absence, Chelsea may need to consider delving into the transfer market to bolster their offensive capabilities. The club faced challenges in the previous Premier League season, scoring only 38 goals and finishing in 12th place, marking their lowest position since 1994.
