Finland has announced the extension of its border closure with Russia, originally implemented late last year due to a surge in undocumented migrants entering the country. The closure, which was set to expire on April 14, will remain in effect indefinitely, according to the Finnish Interior Ministry.

The decision to prolong the border closure stems from concerns regarding the influx of migrants without proper documentation from Russia into Finland. The Interior Ministry expressed apprehension that Russia may be exploiting migration as a political tool against Finland, citing ongoing risks of resumed and expanded instrumentalized migration.
Migration Patterns
The surge in migrants entering Finland without proper documentation occurred in the months following September, coinciding with Finland’s recent NATO membership. Most of the migrants originate from the Middle East and Africa, particularly countries like Afghanistan, Egypt, Iraq, Somalia, Syria, and Yemen, seeking asylum in Finland, an EU member state.
Accusations Against Russia
Prime Minister Petteri Orpo and the Finnish government have accused Russia of intentionally directing migrants towards the Finland-Russia border, which serves as both Finland’s border and the EU’s northern external border. However, the Kremlin denies these allegations, accusing Finland of avoiding dialogue regarding border issues.
Closure Measures
All eight land border crossing points between Finland and Russia for individuals have been closed since December 15. While the southeastern rail checkpoint for cargo trains in Vainikkala remains operational, the Finnish government announced the closure of three maritime checkpoints starting April 15. Despite the border closure, migrants can still seek asylum in Finland through airports and harbors, as Finland constitutes a significant part of both the EU’s northern external border and NATO’s northeastern flank.
