An audio recording indicating that Donald Trump may have kept a classified document after leaving the White House has been acquired by US media outlets. In the recording, the former president can be heard shuffling through papers and stating, “This is highly confidential.”
CNN was the first to release the approximately two-minute recording, which reportedly originates from a July 2021 meeting at Trump’s Bedminster golf club in New Jersey. The meeting involved individuals working on the memoir of his former chief of staff, Mark Meadows. CBS, the BBC’s US partner, has also obtained the clip.
Donald Trump has entered a not guilty plea in response to federal charges of mishandling sensitive documents. The audio recording, seemingly the same one cited by federal prosecutors, has been mentioned in the indictment against Mr. Trump. The indictment alleges that he displayed classified documents to individuals lacking security clearance, including a writer and two staff members. However, it remains unclear if the documents referenced in the recording were ultimately recovered by investigators.
