This comes as his scheduled rematch with Dillian Whyte was canceled due to Whyte’s “adverse analytical findings” in a doping test conducted by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA).
Joshua was set to face Whyte for the second time at London’s O2 Arena, but the fight has been replaced by a match against Finland’s Robert Helenius, who was called up as a last-minute replacement.
Whyte’s situation is not isolated, as multiple boxers have recently failed drug tests, including Amir Khan and Conor Benn. Joshua stated that boxing’s decentralized nature, where athletes train in local gyms, might expose them to questionable practices.
Joshua expressed the importance of thorough testing and affirmed that he is constantly subjected to drug tests throughout the year. He submits his whereabouts on a regular basis for unannounced testing, emphasizing his commitment to maintaining a clean reputation.
While addressing the issue, Joshua indicated that focusing solely on longer bans might not be enough to address the root of the doping problem. He expressed his uncertainty about the solution but noted the need to prevent reputation damage.
Regarding his decision to face Helenius as a last-minute replacement, Joshua cited a sense of responsibility toward his coach, broadcasters, and the undercard fighters who had prepared for the event. Helenius, who had previously been knocked out by Deontay Wilder, affirmed his readiness to fight and expressed respect for Joshua’s skills.
