Strong Support for Harris Across Europe

A recent YouGov poll reveals that a significant majority of Europeans favor Kamala Harris in the upcoming U.S. presidential election, with notable backing even from certain far-right groups. The survey indicates that most respondents believe Harris has a better chance than Donald Trump as the next president of the United States. This enthusiasm reflects a broader political sentiment across several European countries, underscoring a diverse range of voter preferences.

Varied Preferences Among European Nations

The survey encompassed voters from the UK, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Sweden, and Denmark, with Harris emerging as the preferred candidate overall. Denmark leads the way with a remarkable 81% of voters supporting the Democrat. Although Harris also enjoyed a favorable standing in Italy, she fell short of a majority, garnering 46% among Italian voters. Support for Harris remains particularly robust within left-leaning groups, such as the Greens in Germany and Venstre in Denmark, who show nearly unanimous backing.

Unexpected Backing from Far-Right Voters

Interestingly, the poll highlights that some far-right voters in Europe also lean towards Harris. While parties like Germany’s Alternative for Germany and Spain’s Vox prefer Trump, supporters of the Sweden Democrats opt for Harris instead. In France, voters aligned with Marine Le Pen’s National Rally show a preference for Harris over Trump by a margin of 46% to 31%. This trend illustrates a complex political landscape, where even far-right constituents exhibit a willingness to support Harris in the election.

Concerns Over Potential Violence

Many Western Europeans express anxiety about the potential for violence in the U.S. if Trump loses to Harris. In Denmark, a staggering 73% anticipate that unrest will likely follow Trump’s election defeat. Similar fears resonate in other surveyed countries, with 62% to 67% sharing these sentiments; Italy is the exception with only 47% perceiving violence as inevitable. Historical context, particularly the riots associated with Trump in 2021, likely fuels these apprehensions.

Trust in Harris’s Chances

Despite their support for Harris, many Europeans are somewhat cautious about her chances of winning. While majorities in various countries believe she can defeat Trump, confidence levels vary. In Germany, 61% feel she has the upper hand, whereas this sentiment drops to as low as 43% in Italy. The findings reveal a mix of hope and skepticism among European voters, reflecting their complex relationship with U.S. politics as the election approaches.
