An attack on a military base in eastern Burkina Faso on Thursday has resulted in the deaths of 33 soldiers and injured 12, according to the military-led government. The attack targeted the Ougarou military detachment in Burkina Faso’s Est Region. The army has reported that the besieged soldiers managed to kill at least 40 terrorists before reinforcements arrived. The country is facing a violent jihadist insurgency that has spread from neighbouring Mali over the past decade, killing thousands and displacing over 2 million.

Burkina Faso’s authorities have struggled to regain ground in recent months, despite boosting security operations, and as a result, violence in the country has escalated. There have been accusations that the armed forces have indiscriminately killed civilians during anti-insurgency missions. Last week, men dressed in army uniforms raided a village in northern Burkina Faso, killing at least 150 people, according to the United Nations.

The military government has condemned the attack and stated that it will investigate the events. Frustration over the authorities’ failure to protect civilians has led to two coups in the country last year. The situation in Burkina Faso remains challenging as the government tries to tackle the insurgency while protecting the citizens. The country is in urgent need of international support to address the security crisis that is causing immense human suffering.
